Special Instructions for Mac Users

Image Map - Text Links at Page Bottom

Dear Friends,

Due to a problem introduced by Microsoft, you can no longer access our secure order forms if you are using Internet Explorer for the Mac. (The problem does not apply to PCs.) It is extremely unlikely that this problem will ever be fixed, because Microsoft no longer supports Internet Explorer for the Mac. The symptom of the problem is that you get a "data decryption error" message or an "insecure connection" message when you try to access our secure order forms—or, for that matter, any other secure sites that use the same protective software. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you, and we offer you the following three ways around it.

1) You can simply call our office, (510) 849-4545, and leave all your order information on the answering machine. Our phone system is completely secure and any orders left in this way will be perfectly safe, but if you are at all nervous about leaving your credit card data on the answering machine, simply leave us your phone number and what you wish to order, and we will be responsible for calling you back.

2) You can use the Threepenny Search Form to access the desired item through ABE rather than through our own secure site. Just type "One-Year Subscription" or "Issue 96" or whatever it is you want into the Title line, and ABE will come up with our listing for that item. You will then be able to buy it online through ABE just as you would any of our back issues.

3) If you have already upgraded to OS X, you can easily solve the problem by using Apple’s Safari browser instead of Internet Explorer. Alternatively, if you are still using OS 9, you can download Netscape 7.0 for the Mac, which does not have the same problem as Internet Explorer for the Mac. This is a serious proposition and means changing browsers, but it does allow you to get around the problem not only for our site but for all other secure sites with the same software. To help you do this, we offer the following link to the Netscape 7.0 download page:

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.02/mac/macos8/sea/Netscape-mac-full.bin

Once again, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you. I want it to be as easy as possible for you to order Threepenny subscriptions and issues, and I regret the difficulties that Microsoft has introduced and that are, alas, beyond our control.

Sincerely,

Wendy Lesser, Editor
